Ship Hand: Bones 3 Figure

  This past week I picked another easy one to paint.  With it being the Thanksgiving weekend, I was traveling; and I still have a number of other painting projects I'm trying to finish up before the holiday stuff gets really crazy.   So, following on the heels of the Ship Captain last week, I did the Ship Hand, from the Bones 3 "Mythos Expansion: Part 3" this week.  I didn't buy this expansion, but picked up this figure through a trade.
     I prepped the figure in the usual way; soaking it in a dish of water with a couple drops of dish-soap added, then giving it a light scrub with a soft toothbrush, and then rinsing and drying it.   I then glued the figure to a black-primed 1" fender washer with Aleene's Tacky glue, and then placed the figure in my painting grip.

      I began by painting his face and hands with Americana "Shading Flesh", and then painted his jacket with Crafter's Acrylic "Navy Blue", and his pants with Americana "Neutral Grey".

     Next, I painted his hair with Crafter's Acrylic "Cinnamon Brown", and his hat with Ceramcoat "Opaque Red".  I then painted his neckerchief with Apple Barrel "Apple Scotch Blue", his belaying pin with Americana "Light Cinnamon", and his shoes with Ceramcoat "Black".

    When everything was dry, I gave his face, hands, and hat a wash with Citadel  "Reikland Fleshshade" wash; and when that was dry, I gave the rest of him a wash with Citadel "Nuln Oil " wash.    I then painted his eyes, and highlighted his face and hands with the base "Shading Flesh", and some Crafter's Acrylic "Flesh".  After that, I highlighted his hat with Crafter's Acrylic "Orange Spice", and his hair with Americana "Sable Brown".

     I then highlighted his pants with Crafter's Acrylic "Storm Cloud Grey", and his jacket with Ceramcoat "Denim Blue".  Next, I highlighted his neckerchief with crafter's Acrylic "Cool Blue", the belaying pin with Ceramcoat "Territorial Beige", and his shoes with Americana "Zinc".
      Lastly, I painted the figure's integral base with Americana "Bittersweet Chocolate".
     I let the figure dry overnight and the next day I gave it a coat of Americana "DuraClear Matte" varnish.    Then, when  the varnish was dry, I used some white glue to flock the base.  Another overnight dry, and I sprayed it with Testor's Dullcote".

     I'm happy with this one too.  Like last week's Captain, he's nothing exciting; but will certainly work just fine on the tabletop.

Ship Captain: Bones 3 Figure

     I prepped the figure in the usual way; soaking it in a dish of water with a couple drops of dish-soap added, then giving it a light scrub with a soft toothbrush, and then rinsing and drying it.   I then glued the figure to a black-primed 1" fender washer with Aleene's Tacky glue, and then placed the figure in my painting grip.

      I began by painting his face and hands with Reaper MSP "Tanned Skin", and then painted his clothing and hat with Crafter's Acrylic "Navy Blue".

      I then painted the rolled up map(?) in his hand with Americana "Bleached Sand", his mug with Americana "Light Cinnamon", and his pipe with Apple Barrel "Apple Maple Syrup".  (I decided it looked like a corncob pipe.)    When everything was dry, I gave his face and hands a wash with Citadel  "Reikland Fleshshade" wash; and when that was dry, I gave his map, mug, and pipe a wash with Citadel "Agrax Earthshade" wash.

     Next, when the washes were dry, I painted his hair with Americana "Zinc", his sweater collar with Americana "Neutral Grey", and his teeth with the "Bleached Sand".  I then painted his shoes, and the brim of his hat,  Ceramcoat "Black".   I let everything dry awhile again, and then gave his hat, hair, and clothing a wash with Citadel "Nuln Oil" wash.

     When the wash was dry,  I painted his eyes and highlighted his face with Raper MSP "Tanned Highlight".   I then highlighted his hair with Americana "Grey Sky".  Next, I highlighted his clothes and hat with Ceramcoat denim Blue", and then did the brim of his hat and shoes with the "Zinc".  I then highlighted his map with Crafter's Acrylic "Light Antique White", and his mug with Americana "Sable Brown".   After that, I went pack and painted in the holes in the pipe and mug with the "Black", and then painted his buttons, and the bands on the mug with Ceramcoat "Bronze".
     Lastly, I painted the figure's integral base with Americana "Bittersweet Chocolate".
     I let the figure dry overnight and the next day I gave it a coat of Americana "DuraClear Matte" varnish.    Then, when  the varnish was dry, I used some white glue to flock the base.  Another overnight dry, and I sprayed it with Testor's Dullcote".

     Well, there he is.  Nothing great, but a good tabletop-ready paint job.   Should have given his eyes more attention, but I was in a hurry to get him done.

Bandit Leader: Bones 3 Figure

  Well, I was able to squeeze in some painting time last week after all, (despite Fall-In being this past weekend) and I finally finished the figure I had been working on for the past 3 weeks: Bandit Leader, from the Bones 3 Stoneskull Expansion, Part 3.  This is the final figure I had left to do from this set.
   The figure was a bit oddly sculpted I felt, being almost entirely two dimensional looking.  So I decided to do a little modification on him to help look less stilted.

     I prepped this figure in the usual way; soaking it in a dish of water with a couple drops of dish-soap added, then giving it a light scrub with a soft toothbrush, and then rinsing and drying it.   I then cut both arms at the elbows and after slicing off a small angled section of each arm, re-glued them so they bent in more.  After that, I glued the figure to a black-primed 1" fender washer with Aleene's Tacky glue, and then placed the figure in my painting grip.

      I began by painting his armor with Ceramcoat "Black".  When dry, I drybrushed the armor with  Folk Art Metallics "Gunmetal Grey".  I then painted his skin with Americana "Shading Flesh".

     Next, I painted his leggings with Americana "Neutral Grey", and his skirt with Accent "Real Umber".  I then painted his hood and sleeves with Folk Art "Barnyard Red", and his leather armor with Americana "Terra Cotta".  After that, I did his waist belt with Americana "Light Cinnamon", and boots and the shield strap with Americana "Raw Umber".

     I then continued with the "Raw Umber, using it to paint all the straps and the pouch on his belt, as well as the grip of his sword.  After that, I painted the front of his shield with Folk Art "Deep Tomato Red",the back with Americana "Mississippi Mud", and the sword with Americana "Zinc".  Then, when the figure had a while to dry, I gave the entire thing a wash with  Citadel "Agrax Earthsahde" wash.
     Unfortunately, I must have fouled my "Agrax Earthsahde" or something, because I found in many places (see the base of the hood for example) it dried white for some reason.

     When the wash was dry, I painted the eyes (I hate doing eyes inside hoods!), and highlighted the face and hands with Crafter's Acrylic "Flesh".   I then highlighted the leggings with Crafter's Acrylic "Storm Cloud Grey", and his hood and sleeves with Crafter's Acrylic "Orange Spice".

     Next, I highlighted the skirt with Nicole's "Brown", and then the leather armor with Accent "Golden Oxide".  I then highlighted the belt with Americana "Sable Brown", and the shoes, belts and straps with Folk Art "Teddy Bear Brown".  After that, I highlighted the face of the shield with Ceramcoat "Bright Red", and then painted the sword with the "Gunmetal Grey".  I then went around and highlighted all the metal with Ceramcoat "Metallic Silver".
      Lastly, I painted the figure's integral base with Americana "Bittersweet Chocolate".
     I let the figure dry overnight and the next day I gave it a coat of Americana "DuraClear Matte" varnish.    Then, when  the varnish was dry, I used some white glue to flock the base.  Another overnight dry, and I sprayed it with Testor's Dullcote".

     Well, considering he took 3 weeks to complete, I'm glad to finally have him done!   There's nothing that great about him, but he will do just fine for the table top.

No Figure Again, Sorry!

   Well, last week's under-the-weather turned into a serious electrolyte problem this week, and I've spent the last few days in the hospital while the doctors sorted out what was causing it, and came up with a solution for fixing it.  In fact, I just got home this afternoon.   So needless to say, I was unable to finish the figure I had been working on.    I may be able to squeeze in finishing it in the next couple days, but this weekend is the Fall-In convention; so I can't make any promises that I'll have it for next Monday. 
   In the meantime, here's a preview! 

No Figure Today

     Hey, readers.  I've been a bit under the weather the past few days, and so wasn't able to get a figure finished to post today.   Fingers crossed I'll have one ready for next Monday!

Dire Bear: Bones 3 Figure

     This past week was a short one as I was traveling over a long weekend, so I picked a really easy model to do.  The Dire Bear from the Bones 3 Stoneskull Expansion seemed just the thing to get done in just a few days.
      I prepped the figure in the usual way; soaking it in a dish of water with a couple drops of dish-soap added, then giving it a light scrub with a soft toothbrush, and then rinsing and drying it.   I then glued the figure to a black-primed 1.25" fender washer with Aleene's Tacky glue, and then placed the figure in my painting grip.

     I began by painting the entire bear with Reaper MSP "Turkey Brown", and then painting the paw pads and claws with Ceramcoat "Walnut".  Next, I painted the mouth with Americana "Shading Flesh", the teeth with Americana "Antique White", and the nose with Ceramcoat "Black".

     When everything had time to dry, I gave the entire figure a wash with Citadel "Agrax Earthshade" wash.   When the wash was dry, I drybrushed the fur with Ceramcoat "Territorial Beige", followed by some Folk Art "Butter Pecan", and lastly a little of the "Antique White".  I then highlighted the nose and claws with Americana "Neutral Grey", and then highlighted the teeth with some Americana "Bleached Sand". 

       Lastly, I painted the figure's integral base with Americana "Bittersweet Chocolate".

      I let the figure dry overnight and the next day I gave it a coat of Americana "DuraClear Matte" varnish.    Then, when  the varnish was dry, I used some white glue to flock the base.  Another overnight dry, and I sprayed it with Testor's Dullcote".

     Well, you can tell he was a rushed job.  I'm not happy with the highlighting.  I studied pictures of grizzly bears, and there's an odd way the fur reflects the sunlight that I tried to catch, but I think it just made him look a little mottled.  Or it may have to do with the almost bumpy way the fur is sculpted.  Anyway, he's certainly good enough for the game table, so I'm satisfied with that.

Half-Orc Merchant: Bones 3 Figure

   This past week I wrapped up the Bones 3 Townsfolk set by painting the Half-Orc Merchant figure.
    I prepped the figure in the usual way; soaking it in a dish of water with a couple drops of dish-soap added, then giving it a light scrub with a soft toothbrush, and then rinsing and drying it.   I then glued the figure to a black-primed 1" fender washer with Aleene's Tacky glue, and then placed the figure in my painting grip.

     I began by giving the figure a wash with Reaper MSP "Grey Liner"; and when that was dry, I painted his face with with a mix of  Aleene's "Deep Khaki" and Americana "Shading Flesh".  I then painted his pants with Anita's "Burnt Sienna"". and his coat with Crafter's Acrylic "Orange Spice"

   Next, I painted his hat and gloves with Americana "True Blue", and then did all the trim on his coat, hat, gloves, necklace and the sign disk, with Accent "Golden Harvest".  After that, I painted his collar and stockings with Folk Art "Platinum Grey", and then did his hair and shoes with Ceramcoat "Black".

      While I had the "Black" out, I also painted his backpack frame.  I then painted his belts with Accent "Real Umber", and the pouch on the front with Ceramcoat "Black Cherry".  After that, I painted his side pouches with Reaper MSP "Turkey Brown", and his sign pole with Reaper MSP Bones "Cinnamon Red".    I also decided at this point that I wasn't doing to make the sign disk gold; but instead I wanted to do it white like a sign board, so I painted it with Americana "Snow White".  I also, thinking the gloves looked fingerless,  went pack and painted his fingers the same mix of colors I had used on his face.

     It was then time to work on his load.  I started by painting the keg with Ceramcoat "Territorial Beige", and the small case with Folk Art "Hunter Green". I then painted the bundle with Folk Art "Barn Wood", and the chest with Americana "Light Cinnimon".  After that, I painted the fittings on the chest with Ceramcoat "Bronze", and then painted all the rope with Americana "Khaki Tan".

     Next, I painted his necklace and buckles with the "Bronze". When everything had a while to dry, I gave the entire figure a wash with Citadel "Reikland Fleshshade" wash.  When this wash was dry, I painted the eyes and fangs, and then highlighted his face with a mix of the "Deep "Khaki", some Aleene's "Dusty Khaki", and a little Crafter's Acrylic "Flesh". I then highlighted his pants with Americana "Georgia Clay", and his jacket with Crafter's Acrylic "Pure Pumpkin".  After that, I highlighted his color and stockings with the "Snow White", andhis sign pole with Americana "Opaque Red".

      I then highlighted the trim on his coat and hat with Crafter's Acrylic "Bright Yellow", and his hat and gloves with Crafter's Acrylic "Tropical Blue".   Next, I highlighted his front pouch with Americana "Burgundy Wine", and his side pouches with Americana "Sable Brown".
   At this point  went around back, and highlighted his keg with Americana "Bleached Sand", and the case with Americana "Festive Green".  I then did the bundle with Folk Art "Porcelain White", and the chest with the "Sable Brown".  I used the "Bleached Sand" again to highlight the ropes.
     Next, I highlighted all the "Bronze" with Ceramcoat "14K Gold", and highlighted the backpack rack with Accent "Princely Pewter".
     Keeping with the medieval tradition of merchants using signs which depicted what they sold, to help the illiterate populace, I tried to think of what kind of signage a general merchant would have (which I thought this fellow looked like.) I finally decided on a pan scale to represent "Trader"; and so, after repainting the sign with the "Snow White",  I painted on the pan scale with the "Black".
      Lastly, I painted the figure's integral base with Americana "Bittersweet Chocolate".
      I let the figure dry overnight and the next day I gave it a coat of Americana "DuraClear Matte" varnish.    Then, when  the varnish was dry, I used some white glue to flock the base.  Another overnight dry, and I sprayed it with Testor's Dullcote".

     I'm really happy with how this big fella turned out.  I wanted him to look flamboyant, figuring he'd dress brightly to attract customers, and to show he's a man of means; but also because I thought he is probably self-conscious about being part orc, and considered by most folks to be "ugly", so he over compensates with his clothing.  My only unhappiness is with his sign, which I saved for the last and ended up rushing.  I'm not happy with how it looks (I think it looks more like a sailboat, than a pan scale!) and it just looks amateurish.  I may go back and re-do it if it eats at me enough.
