This past week I worked on another Gnoll Warrior, this one by sculptor Bobby Jackson. (The earlier Gnoll Warriors I painted are by Tre Manor). I'm not sure where I picked this fellow up, or if he was ever part of a Kickstarter as I couldn't find him shown anywhere. He is not a good match for the others stylistically, but I figure he can join the pack as a hero, where his visual difference makes him stand out; or as a rank and file fighter hidden in the back of the wide-angle panning battle shots. :)
I prepped the figure in the usual way; soaking it in a dish of water with a couple drops of dish-soap added, then giving it a light scrub with a soft toothbrush, and then rinsing and drying it. I then glued the figure to a black-primed 1.25" fender washer with Aleene's Tacky glue, and then glued the washer-mounted figure to a tongue depressor with a couple drops of the Elmer's glue.
I began by giving the figure a wash with heavily thinned Reaper "Grey Liner" using a wet brush. When that was dry, I painted his fur Folk Art "Porcelain White", and then did his mane, beard, and the end of the tail, with Reaper MSP "Pumpkin Orange". I then painted his loincloth with Reaper MSP Bones "Cinnamon Red".
Next, I painted his leggings with Americana "Mississippi Mud", and the right forearm wraps with Folk Art "Butter Pecan". I then did his necklace and belt with Folk Art "Dark Brown", and his axe handle and the back of his shield with Folk Art "Teddy Bear Brown". After hat I painted the rest of the right forearm arm-guard, and the left hand wrap and armband, all with Americana "Terra Cotta".
I next painted his shield front with Apple Barrel "Yellow", and then the inside of his mouth and his tongue with Americana :"Shading Flesh". I then did the the shield strap and the grip of his dagger with Americana "Asphaltum", and then his teeth with Americana "Antique White". After the teeth, it was time to base coat the metal parts; so I painted the axe, dagger, the rim and hub of his shield, and the armored plates on his loincloth with Americana "Zinc", and the round badges on his belt and necklace, as well as the band on his left arm, with Accent "Mustard Seed".
I let those colors dry a while, and then I came back and painted over the "Zinc" with Folk Art Metallics "Gunmetal Grey", and I painted over the "Mustard Seed" with Ceramcoat "Bronze". Then another break to let the metallic paint dry, and afterwards I came back and gave the entire figure a wash with Citadel "Nuln Oil" wash using a wet brush. When the wash was dry, I highlighted his mane, beard, and tail end with Americana "Tangerine", and his body with a mix of the base "Porcelain White" and some Americana "Dove Grey".
Next, I painted his muzzle, claws, and eyes with Black, and then added a small white dot to each eye. I then highlighted his tongue with Crafter's Acrylic "Cherry Blossom Pink", and his teeth with Crafter's Acrylic "Light Antique White". Next, I highlighted his loincloth with Reaper MSP "Holly Berry", and his belt, necklace, and axe handle with Americana "Sable Brown". After those, I went back and highlighted his nose and claws with Americana "Neutral Grey", and then highlighted his feet wraps with Americana "Khaki Tan". After that, I highlighted his arm guards and adornments with Accent "Golden Oxide", and the wraps on the one on his right arm with Folk Art "Grey Green". I highlighted the shield with Reaper MSP "Golden Glow", and the dagger grip and shield strap with the "Mississippi Mud".
I then turned to the metallics; highlighting the axe, loincloth plates, shield rim and hub, and the dagger with Ceramcoat "Metallic Silver". Next, I highlighted the parts I had painted with the "Bronze", using Ceramcoat "14K Gold".
When I was done painting the figure, I used some white glue to glue a little sand to the base. When this was dry, I painted the sand and the figure's own base with Black. When the Black was dry, I drybrushed the bases with some Apple Barrel "Rock Grey", and then some Folk Art "Platinum Grey".
I let the figure dry overnight and the next day I gave him a coat of Americana "DuraClear Matte" varnish. Another overnight dry, and I sprayed it with Testor's Dullcote".
I'm generally happy with how he came out. Nothing too fancy or complicated. :)
In other news, my Bones 3 box is scheduled to arrive on Wednesday! So I think I will post some photos here on Thursday for those interested in seeing what I got. And If I'm feeling really ambitious I will try to make an unboxing video since they seem to be popular these days. :)

2 More Gnoll Warriors: Bones 2 Figures
This past week I painted the remaining two Gnoll Warriors from the Bones II 24 Bonus Figures set.
I prepped these figures in the usual way; soaking them in a dish of water with a couple drops of dish-soap added, then giving them a light scrub with a soft toothbrush, and then rinsing and drying them.
I wanted to make these look a little different than the other two I did a few weeks ago; so for the one on the left, I cut his hand off at the wrist, and then rotated backwards and super-glued it back on, so it would look more like he was on the back part of his swing rather than the forward part. For the one on the right, I sliced off his hand, and replaced it with a sword wielding one from the Bones 1 Orcapocalypse figures; left over from when I was converting some of those a year or so ago.
I then glued the figures to black-primed 1.5" fender washers with Aleene's Tacky glue, and then glued the washer-mounted figures to a tongue depressor with a couple drops of the Elmer's glue under each washer.
I began by giving the figure a wash with heavily thinned Reaper "Brown Liner" using a wet brush.
Next, I painted their armor all Black, and when it was dry I drybrushed it with Folk Art Metallics "Gunmetal Grey". I then passed over the armor with a lighter drybrush of Folk Art "Silver Sterling". Next, I painted heir fur with Americana "Mississippi Mud", and then painted their manes and the end of their tails with Games Workshop "Vermin Brown".
I then repainted the shield metalwork, and morning star metal parts with the "Gunmetal Grey", and then let everything dry for a while. When I returned to the figures, I gave them both a wash with Citadel "Nuln Oil" wash using a wet brush. When the wash was dry, I highlighted their fur with Folk Art "Barn Wood", and their manes, and the end of their tails, with Accent "Golden Oxide". After that, I painted their muzzles, noses, eyes, claws, and the bases, Black.

After that, I painted all their straps and belts with Americana "Raw Umber", and then painted the handle of their morning stars with Crafter's Acrylic "Cinnamon Brown" and their teeth with Americana "Antique White".
Next, I painted alternating stripe patterns on their shields with Ceramcoat "Black Cherry", and Apple Barrel "Yellow". I then painted the shield metalwork, and the morning star metal parts with Americana Zinc. After that, I painted the patch of material under the strap on their left shoulder blade and the wraps on their feet, with the "Antique White" again.I then repainted the shield metalwork, and morning star metal parts with the "Gunmetal Grey", and then let everything dry for a while. I then highlighted the handle of the morning stars and the feet wraps with Folk Art "Butter Pecan", and then did the teeth with Crafter's Acrylic "Light Antique White". I then went back over the metal parts adding highlights with Ceramcoat "Metallic Silver".
Lastly, I used some white glue to glue a little sand to the bases. When this was dry, I painted it all Black. When the Black was dry, I drybrushed it, and the Gnolls' bases, with Americana "Neutral Grey", and then some Folk Art "Platinum Grey". I let the figures dry overnight and the next day I gave them a coat of Americana "DuraClear Matte" varnish. Another overnight dry, and I sprayed them with Testor's Dullcote".
I'm happy with how these turned out as well. And I think the conversions ended up looking pretty good too. Here is a photo of all the Gnolls from Bones II together.

Boneflail, Gnoll Cleric: Bones II Figure
This past week I painted up the Boneflail, Gnoll Cleric, figure from the Bones II Gnolls & Bugbears set. This is my third Gnoll to complete as I work my way through the ones from the Bones II Kickstarter in the eventual expectation to play the scenarios in the Frostgrave "Into the Breeding Pits" supplement book.
Next, I pained the belt with Reaper MSP "Turkey Brown", and then painted the side pouch and its strap, as well as the right arm wrist guard, with Citadel "Snake Bite Leather. I then painted the face of the shield with Folk Art "Barnyard Red" and the inside of the shield with Folk Art "Dark Brown". I also used the "Dark Brown" to paint the rear pouch, and then I painted the little sack tucked in the belt with Americana "Mississippi Mud". After that, I painted the fringe on the tunic with Crafter's Acrylic "Bright Yellow", then used the "Bright Yellow" to paint a bone deign on the shield.
When that was dry, I painted his fur (or is it supposed to be a her?) Folk Art "Gray Green", and then did his/her mane, and the end of the tail, with Apple Barrel "Burnt Sienna". I then painted the tunic with Aleene's "Deep Khaki".Next, I pained the belt with Reaper MSP "Turkey Brown", and then painted the side pouch and its strap, as well as the right arm wrist guard, with Citadel "Snake Bite Leather. I then painted the face of the shield with Folk Art "Barnyard Red" and the inside of the shield with Folk Art "Dark Brown". I then painted the straps on the shield with Americana "Bittersweet Chocolate", and the wraps on his feet with Americana "Asphaltum". After that I painted all the bones and skulls with Americana "Antique White". I then went back and painted the horns on the front skull with FolkArt "Barn Wood", and the teeth on the shoulder skull, as well as the gnoll's teeth, with Americana "Bleached Sand". Next, I painted all the little strings tying the bones on the gnoll's outfit, with the "Barnyard Red"; and then did the little cloth patches on the top of the tunic with Crafter's Acrylic "Christmas Red", Crafter's Acrylic "Purple Passion", and White. After that, I painted the armband and the morning star with Americana "Zinc".
I painted the morning star and the arm band with Folk Art Metallic's "Gunmetal Grey", and then when everything had a while to dry, I gave the entire figure a wash with Citadel "Nuln Oil" wash using a wet brush. When the wash was dry, I drybrushed the fur with Folk Art "Porcelain White", and then highlighted the mane and tail fringe with Americana "Shading Flesh". After that, I painted the eyes and the muzzle Black.
Next, I highlighted the tunic with Aleene's Dusty Khaki, and then highlighted all the bones with the "Bleached Sand", and the teeth with Crafter's Acrylic "Light Antique White". I then highlighted the side pouch and wrist guard with Ceramcoat "Maple Sugar Tan", and then I did the highlights on the shield and all the little bone ties with Crafter's Acrylic Orange Spice." After that, I highlighted all the browns with Americana "Sable Brown", and then did the stitching on the shield and the back bottom of the tunic with Americana "Khaki". Lastly, I highlighted the metal parts with Ceramcoat "Metallic Silver"
When I was done painting the figure, I used some white glue to glue a little sand to the base. When this was dry, I painted it all Black. When the Black was dry, I drybrushed it with some of the "Neutral Grey", and then some Duncan "Slate Grey".
I let the figure dry overnight and the next day I gave him/her a coat of Americana "DuraClear Matte" varnish. Another overnight dry, and I sprayed it with Testor's Dullcote".
I'm happy with how this figure came out; though I have to say all these gnolls so far, particularly this one, have had a tone of flash on the mold lines that I'm not used to seeing on Bones.

Toghra, Gnoll Leader: Bones II Figure
This past week I painted up the Toghra, Gnoll Leader, figure from the Bones II Gnolls & Bugbears set. My second Gnoll to complete as I work my way through them in the eventual expectation to play the scenarios in the Frostgrave "Into the Breeding Pits" supplement book.
I prepped the figure in the usual way; soaking it in a dish of water with a couple drops of dish-soap added, then giving it a light scrub with a soft toothbrush, and then rinsing and drying it. I began by giving the figure a wash with heavily thinned Reaper "Grey Liner" using a wet brush. When that was dry, I painted his fur and chest armor with Americana "Zinc", and then did his mane with Ceramcoat "Maple Sugar Tan". I then painted his tunic with Crafter's Acrylic "African Violet".
I then painted his bone staff with Americana "Antique White" and the guard on his right forearm with Americana "Sable Brown". After that I painted his belt, pouch, and the wraps around his left foot with Americana "Raw Umber", and the bag tucked in his belt with Americana "Mississippi Mud". I also used the "Mississippi Mud" to paint the ropes on the right forearm guard, and the bones staff. Next, I painted the left forearm guard with Apple Barrel "Burnt Senna"; and then the handle of the horse hair rod, the dogs head on the left forearm guard, the belt buckle, and the decoration on the head of the staff, with Accent "Golden Harvest". I then painted his teeth and teeth in the jaws on the staff's head with Americana "Buttermilk". I painted the ribbon on the staff with Ceramcoat "Black Cherry", and then hit the base of the staff, and spike on the right forearm guard with the "Zinc".
Next, I went back and painted his chest armor, the base of the staff, and spike on the right forearm guard with Folk Art Metallic's "Gunmetal Grey". I then went back and repainted the parts I had painted with the "Golden Harvest" with Ceramcoat "Bronze". Next , I repainted the left forearm guard and the band on the right foot with Ceramcoat "Copper".
Then, after everything had time to dry, I gave the entire figure a wash with Citadel "Nuln Oil" wash using a wet brush". When the Wash was dry, I highlighted his mane with ,Americana "Moon Yellow", and then drybrushed his fur with Americana "Grey Sky".
I then painted his eyes and muzzle, as well as the tip of his tail with Black. Then, while I had the Black out, I painted the horse hair rod, and his claws. After that, I worked on highlighting his tunic using a mix of the base "African Violet" mixed with some Apple Barrel "Apple Lavender". I then worked on the staff, I highlighting the bones with Americana "Bleached Sand". I moved from there to highlighting the teeth on the staff's head and in his mouth with Crafter's Acrylic "Light ANtique White". Next, I highlighted his belt, straps, and pouches with Americana "Territorial Beige, and then highlighted all the rope with Americana "Khaki Tan" and the ribbon on the staff with Crafter's Acrylic "Christmas Red". At that point I went back and highlighted the horse hair with Citadel "The Fang", and his claws with Americana "Neutral Grey".
I then highlighted the parts I had painted "Bronze" with Ceramcoat "14K Gold", and highlighted the he parts I had painted with the "Gunmetal Grey" using Ceramcoat "Metallic Silver". The parts I had painted with the "Copper", I simply highlighted with the base "Copper".
When I was done painting the figure, I used some white glue to glue a little sand to the base. When this was dry, I painted it all Black. When the Black was dry, I drybrushed it with some of the "Neutral Grey", and then some Duncan "Slate Grey".

I'm really happy how this fellow tuned out, though I'm not particularly a fan of the sculpt; while it's wonderfully dynamic, it lacks a real focal point, or an easily determined front, making it difficult to get a good photo of it.

Bloodmane, Gnoll Warrior: Bones II Figure
This week I painted up the Bloodmane, Gnoll Warrior, figure from the Bones II Gnolls & Bugbears set. I ended up with a bunch of the Bones II Gnolls through trades and flea market purchases, so I thought it was about time to start work on them. I'm going to need them eventually for the Frostgrave "In To The Breeding Pits" supplement, so rather than wait until the last minute, I thought I'd start now and allow myself the luxury of being able to work on them at a leisurely pace.
When that was dry, I painted the armor and shield Black. When the Black was dry, I drybrushed it with Folk Art Metallics "Gunmetal Grey". I then passed over the armor with a lighter drybrush of Folk Art "Silver Sterling".
I then painted his fur with Americana "Mississippi Mud", and his mane and tail fringe with Crafter's Acrylic "Orange Spice". Next, I painted his kilt with Americana "Zinc", and then painted the inside back of his shield with Teddy Bear Brown".
